Designing furniture and decor is no easy feat - especially when creating your ideas from reclaimed materials, such as a Wine or Oak Barrel. The process of conceiving, planning, sketching, and finally fabricating is tedious and tremendous amounts of work. However, the end result is always worth the effort put forth. In this article you will be guided through the design process and get an exclusive look at exactly what goes into making Burgundy Oak's products so spectacular. Although we aren't able to share our entire creative process with you, we hope you can draw inspiration from our procedures.  Enjoy a miniature digital tour of our shop and the boys hard at work.

PLANNING

STEP 1 - CHOOSING THE BARREL

We will start by looking at the initial concept and design. You must first think of what materials you are going to use, how they work together, and how to craft them together. An easy way to dive into this large first step is to begin by choosing the barrel you want to use. Luckily for us, we have an entire warehouse full to choose from which gives us a wide variety of barrels.

STEP 2 - SKETCHING & BLUEPRINTING

Another crucial initial step is designing! You ned to have a rough sketch and plan accordingly for what you want your  to look like

STEP 3 - GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY!

Everyones creative process is different. Though some may work better without plans, or vice versa - whatever your pattern is, sooner or later you'll have to jump into it! We start by rolling our barrels into the shop where they will be cut up and disassembled after they have been climatized and cleaned. Although the Red Wine stain & some smell still remains, the barrels are thoroughly cleaned and inspected before we begin our work.

STEP 4 - CUTTING, GRINDING & SANDING

With our barrels in the shop and ready to go, we begin by sanding the excess grit. Followed by cutting the barrel to our desired length and removing the bands. This is a very crucial step to get right as once the barrel is cut, there is no going back! So plan your cuts carefully and always triple check.

STEP 5 - ASSEMBLING

Here you can see Zac and Cory hard at work, enjoying their time delicately and precisely drilling into the barrels and staves to piece together parts and add magnets to the Liquor Cabinet.

STEP 6 - FINISHING TOUCHES & QUALITY ASSURANCE CHECK

Before the finished product goes into the warehouse for shipment, we add the finishing touches. Once fully inspected and reviewed we add the Burgundy Oak seal of quality.
